Community & History

Community

Once a Pointer, Always a Pointer!

Point Loma is a peninsula community, home to around 70,000 residents.  We share a love of the ocean, an appreciation of our military roots and a passion for our uniqueness - there aren’t many High Schools that boast 3rd and 4th generation graduates!  Whether you’re a multi-generational family or a new transplant to the area - we welcome you to our slice of perfection.  Join the Pointer Community family where we take pride in our Point Loma Cluster schools (seven elementary, two middle and one senior high) and look forward to what the next generation will bring.  The success of Point Loma High School is a credit to the entire community, engaged parents, staff, community members, and alumni dedicate much of their time and energy to support the school and our fantastic students - Thank you!

Dedicated in 1925 as Point Loma Junior-Senior High, the school served grades 7 - 12, with 386 students when it opened on September 8, 1925 (NEED PHOTO FROM LAURIE).  Point Loma High School is the third oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District and carries a tradition of pride and excellence.  Pete Ross was the first Principal, with a staff that included 30 teachers. The first graduating class consisted of seven students - three boys and four girls - who celebrated their commencement in Balboa Park.

Some San Diegans opposed creating a school in Point Loma, contending it was too far away from town, but school board member Edgar F. Hastings pushed the proposal through. In its early days the school was sometimes referred to as "Hastings' folly".[5] The original three-story high school building was torn down in the 1970s as part of a statewide requirement to make all schools earthquake-safe. It was replaced by multiple two-story buildings.[6] During the 1950s it was converted to a three-year high school with the opening of Richard Henry Dana Junior High School. In 1983 it became a four-year high school. PLHS now draws from six elementary schools serving grades kindergarten through 4th, and two middle schools: Dana Middle for 5th and 6th and Correia Middle for 7th and 8th.

Point Loma High boasts a number of notable graduates who have made their marks in sports (Eric Allen of the Philadelphia Eagles, Pro Football Hall of Fame), Hollywood (Marion Ross of "Happy Days"), education (San Diego school trustee John de Beck), politics (former San Diego City Councilmen Bill Cleator, Byron Wear and Bill Lowery), business (real estate mogul Malin Burnham) and art (glass artist Steve Correia, for whom Correia Middle School is named).

The school holds the distinction of having produced two major-league baseball pitchers who threw perfect games - David Wells and Don Larsen. Only 24 pitchers have thrown perfect games in Major League Baseball history. Don Larsen, class of '47, pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, helping the New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 Fall Classic. On May 17, 1998, David Wells, also of the New York Yankees, pitched the 15th perfect game in Major League Baseball history and the second in team history. Wells also threw a perfect game while a student at PLHS.[7][8] The team's home field was named David Wells Field in 2010.[9]
